Journal: "If there isn't growth, I am not interested"

Just another disclaimer. These journal entries are NOT proofread and I am shooting from the hip.

I am giving myself a 10 minute timer to say my thoughts, and then moving on with my day. This is more for me to get my thoughts on paper, but I hope you enjoy! 10 minute timer, GO!

Yesterday, a friend and I were talking and we were talking about getting complacent in our jobs.

I said something like, “yeah getting complacent in your job sucks”.

She said, “yeah, I cant do that, if there isn’t growth, Im not interested. That goes for jobs, friendships, relationships etc.”

I just wanted to make note of the fact that I appreciate she said the words that I am thinking but cant always find a way to articulate.

As for my thoughts on that. I believe that people are their happiest when they are in a growth state. Meaning they are moving FORWARD in something. If you aren’t moving forward you are regressing.

Now that could mean a lot of different things. That could be in your career, or your fitness or anything. The goal should always be to find a way to SUSTAINABLY continue to move forward. I do believe there is a balance with that.

Running for example. If you are a new runner. It makes no sense to start running 5-10 miles every day right out the gate. Its not going to be sustainable. Start out with 10 minutes a day so you dont burn out.

In relationships, rarely do relationships last where you go FULL IN right out the gate, start slow, get to know each other, grow with with other.

Careers: Same thing, ive been there, I have went FULL STEAM and crushed my job. Recruiting is a great example, 10 years ago when I started recruiting, I went balls in! Made top recruiter in the state, all that crap, but it wasn’t sustainable, and I eventually burnt out and resigned. It took a 4 year break before I came back in to try it again. If I would have created a better balance, I would be 4 years closer to retirement from the army right now.

See? Im rambling, but that is ok. If you are judging my grammar, or order of thought here, go pack sand somewhere else, because this is just my thoughts on paper, and im allowing you to read it. This is a journal entry, not an article. :-)

Ok, so I guess what I am trying to get at, is… Whatever you are doing. Find a way to GROW while doing it. Make sure you start slow enough to where week after week, you are able to increase the intensity by a little bit.

I realize there will ALWAYS be ups and downs, the growth may not be linear week to week depending on the subject we are discussing. The measurement of growth could be year after year, month after month, week after week? I dont know, thats for you to decide.

10 minute timer just went off. Did I do ok? Ok, Goodbye.
